Following on from the days of Mayweather, many have been looking for a ready- made replacement in the likes of Mexican star Canelo Alvarez. However, it seems the future could just be Errol Spence JR. The 28-year- old, known as ‘the truth’, has continued to be one of the most avoided fighters in world boxing due to him not being that big pay per view draw, but could this be about to change?
Spence is a southpaw who fights out of Desoto, Texas who is coming off a sensational 7 th round stoppage of Lamont Peterson to defend his belt for the first time. There is little disputing as to the skill set of Spence as he has continued to dominate whichever level of opponent that has been put in front of him. His first true test came against Englishmen Kell Brook in his first attempt at a World title.
Errol was dominant through out the contest using his supreme footwork and jab to finally stop Brook for only the second time in his career and the first at the weight class. This stoppage not only made Spence the IBF Welterweight Champion of the World but one of the most exciting fighters in modern times.
Previous opponents and sparring partners have always spoken of Spence in the highest caliber and none more so than from his time spent in the Mayweather boxing club. There have been continued rumors over time of him getting the better of Mayweather on more than one occasion and even being ejected from the gym. It is also known of his dominance over another multiple weight division Champion in Adrian Broner. This has all led to his reputation within boxing and why many of the top fighters do not want to face the skilled Texan.
So what is next for the current IBF Welterweight Champ as he looks to remain active following his layoff? The key fight in the division that has everyone talking is of course between undefeated fighters Spence and Keith Thurman. Rumors are hotting up, and bookies are even beginning to price up the bout already – with many offering some great bonuses. Spence has continued to call out Thurman over the years with Keith always playing down the fight due to Spence needing to earn his chance. Now Spence has his World title this fight looks set to showcase the division in 2018.
Thurman known, as ‘One time’ is the No 1 ranked fighter in the division by the Ring Magazine and is the current unified WBA and WBC welterweight Champion of the world. His record now stands at 28-0 following his impressive victory of the previously unbeaten Danny Garcia. The Florida Native is known for his knock out power and has been through the majority of his career stopping all opponents.
Thurman is due back in the coming months following injury so this fight could take place near the end of 2018. With both fighters going in with big reputations and unbeaten records there is no doubt this could turn out to be one of the best fights in the last decade and certainly a contender for fight of the year. This is one to look forward to for fight fans.
